Reinforcing the Capacity and Contribution of Young Researchers to the Silk Roads

“Silk Roads Youth Research Grant”

As part of the Silk Roads Programme’s ongoing work to better understand the rich history and shared legacy and spirit of the Silk Roads, UNESCO, with the support of the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO, launched the ‘Silk Roads Youth Research Grant’ in 2021 within the framework of the Social and Human Sciences Sector. The third edition was launched on 8 March 2023.

This initiative, which aims to mobilize young researchers for further study of the Silk Roads shared heritage, will award 12 research grants to young women and men under 35 years of age.

Grant applicants are invited to address areas of academic study which relate to the shared heritage and plural identities of the Silk Roads, as well as its internal diversity, and potential in contemporary societies for creativity, intercultural dialogue, social cohesion, regional and international cooperation, and ultimately sustainable peace and development.

Call for Proposals

Research proposals are currently under review by the International Scientific Panel and successful grantees will be announced in the coming weeks. 

What fields of research on the Silk Roads are eligible?

A broad array of research fields, including multidisciplinary and multidimensional proposals not limited to one specific region or chronology, are eligible. Proposed research may cover one or several themes associated with the Silk Roads shared heritage including, but not limited to:

  • Science and Technology and Traditional Knowhow
  • Religion and Spirituality
  • Language and Literature
  • Arts and Music
  • Traditional Sports and Games
  • Economy and Trade
  • The Legacy of the Silk Roads and Contemporary Issues

However, proposed research must focus on the results of cultural interactions and exchanges, and within a given field must showcase the concrete resulting elements, be they tangible or intangible, as identifiable in two or more cultures along the Silk Roads and beyond. Research may be interdisciplinary in approach, and where possible, provide dynamic and novel ideas on the processes of exchange and transformation along the Silk Roads and its meaning and value in contemporary societies.

Les vastes réseaux des Routes de la Soie ont transporté bien plus que des marchandises et des produits de valeur. Le mouvement et le brassage constants des populations ont entraîné la transmission généralisée de connaissances, d'idées, de cultures et de croyances, ce qui a eu un impact profond sur l'histoire et les civilisations des peuples vivant sur ces routes. Les voyageurs le long des Routes de la Soie étaient attirés non seulement par le commerce, mais également par les échanges intellectuels et culturels qui se déroulaient dans les villes le long de ces routes, dont beaucoup se sont transformées en centres de culture et de savoir. En outre, la science, les arts, la littérature, ainsi que l'artisanat et les technologies ont été partagés et diffusés dans les sociétés le long de ces itinéraires, et les langues, les religions et les cultures se sont développées et se sont influencées entre elles.

Les Routes de la Soie font partie d’une vaste région constituée d’un réseau de routes maritime et terrestre. Elles découlent de l’Asie du Sud et de l’Asie du Sud-Est, traversant le sous-continent d’Asie Centrale, les steppes russes, les plateaux iranien et anatolien, ainsi que la péninsule arabique. Elles s’étendent à travers l’Afrique du Nord et l’Afrique du Nord-Est, de la Tanzanie au Maroc ; et à travers l’Europe Orientale et l’Europe du Sud, reliant la France et l’Espagne.

Les chercheurs de troisième cycle, de tous les pays, âgés de 35 ans et moins au moment de la demande sont admissibles à la subvention. La recherche proposée peut être réalisée par un chercheur individuel ou bien peut faire partie d'un projet de groupe ou d'un projet de collaboration. Toutefois, une seule bourse sera accordée par projet de recherche.

The deadline for submitting proposals has been extended to 14 June 2023. The submitted research proposals will be evaluated by a scientific panel comprised of renowned international academics. The list of grant awardees will be announced in autumn 2023.

Les propositions seront évaluées et les subventions accordées sur la base de l'évaluation d'un panel scientifique composé d'un groupe de neuf experts internationaux et universitaires renommés du monde entier, travaillant dans divers domaines liés à l'étude des Routes de la Soie.

Le panel scientifique attribuera les douze subventions de 10 000 $ en fonction des forces de la recherche proposée et de sa contribution potentielle à une meilleure compréhension des interactions et des échanges qui ont lieu à travers les Routes de la Soie et des éléments concrets qui en résultent. La bourse sera accordée en deux versements distincts.

Ms Xia Chen

Professor, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences – China
Co-Chair of the Silk Roads Youth Research Grant

Xia Chen is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy and Director of the Editorial Department for the Journal of Philosophical Trends and Chinese Philosophical Almanac at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Beijing. Specializing in Chinese Philosophy and Religions, particularly Daoism, she has been a visiting scholar at Harvard, SOAS, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Science Po Bordeaux, and a Fulbright Scholar at Brown University. She taught the Chinese Philosophy course at the Council on International Educational Exchange for several years and served as the chairperson for the section of Daoist philosophy at the 24th WCP in Beijing. She is a Member of the Executive Committee of the International Council of Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH) and is the author of many works having contributed hundreds of articles to a number of journals both in Chinese and English.

Mr Peter Frankopan

Professor of Global History, Oxford University – United Kingdom
Co-Chair of the Silk Roads Youth Research Grant

Professor Peter Frankopan is a historian, writer, and Professor of Global History at Oxford University, UK. He specialises in the history of the Byzantine Empire, the Mediterranean, Russia, the Middle East, Persia/Iran, Central and South Asia, and China and has authored numerous books, including "The Silk Roads: A New History of the World" (2015).

Ms Meenakshi Bharat

Associate Professor, University of Delhi – India

Professor Meenakshi Bharat is an Associate Professor at the University of Delhi, India where she teaches the New Literatures in English Course to M.A. students. She has held a number of positions within international organizations, including President of the International Federation of Modern Languages and Literatures (FILLM, UNESCO), and Bureau Member of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences, (CIPSH, UNESCO) 2014-2017.

Mr Mustafa Bayram

Dean of Engineering Faculty and Director of Technopark of University of Gaziantep, Türkiye

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bayram is Dean of the Engineering Faculty and Director of Technopark at the University of Gaziantep. He has previously served as the Director of Technology Transfer Office (TARGET TTO A.Ş.) and the Manager of ULUTEM High Technology and Research Center. His research interests include food history, gastronomy studies, Silk Road studies, the ‘Spice roads’, the migration of foods, and innovation ecosystem design and governance. He has over 25 years of experience in food, tradition, foresight and horizon scanning, and research and analysis for think tanks, public, and private organizations. A visionary and food futurist, he is the author of the book ‘The Future of Food’.  

Mr Doo Won CHO

International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS KOREA) – Republic of Korea

Ms Dilorom Karomat

Institute of Fine Arts of the Academy of Sciences, Uzbekistan

Dr. Dilorom Karomat (PhD) is a leading researcher at the Institute of Fine Arts, Academy of Sciences, Republic of Uzbekistan. She has been a lecturer at the Tashkent State Conservatoire and a fellow and language teacher in several institutions in India including Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public library in Patna, the Asiatic Society, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies in Kolkata. Prior to this, she was a Postdoctoral Research assistant of an Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) project at SOAS University. Her research interests include the musical culture of North Afghanistan, India, Iran, and the Central Asian Republics, as well as Persian and Turkic lexicography and manuscripts on music. She is the editor of the ‘Manuscript Dictionary of the 19th century (Dictionary of Turkish, Persian, Arabic, Hindi and Shushtar dialect in Iran)’ published by Khuda Bakhsh O.P. Library in 2001. She has authored dozens of articles published in English, German, Urdu, Persian, Russian and Uzbek.  

Ms Elena Paskaleva

Leiden University, the Netherlands

Elena Paskaleva is Assistant Professor in Critical Heritage Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands. She specialises in the material culture of Central Asia and the Middle East with a focus on the intercultural exchanges along the Silk Roads. She is the author of “Silk Road Cities Documented Through Vintage Photographs, Prints and Postcards” (2019), co-author and editor of “Memory and Commemoration across Central Asia: Texts, Traditions and Practices, 10th-21st Centuries” (Brill, 2023) and “Exchanges along the Silk Roads. Urbanism. Landscape. Architecture” (UNESCO, 2023). Her current research deals with the history and socio-political importance of Timurid architecture. 

Ms Darina Saliba Abi-Chedid

Director, International Center for Human Sciences (CISH–UNESCO) – Lebanon

Dr Darina Saliba Abi Chedid is the Director of the International Center for Human Sciences (CISH–UNESCO) in Byblos, Lebanon. She is a former professor of Political Science and International Law, and a consultant in Human Rights and Arbitration at Cairo Regional Center for training and arbitration.

Ms Laura Yerekesheva

UNESCO Category 2 Centre for the Rapprochement of Cultures, Kazakhstan

Dr. Laura Yerekesheva is a professor at al-Farabi Kazakh National University’s Oriental Faculty; Faculty of History and a research fellow at the UNESCO Category 2 Centre for the Rapprochement of Cultures in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Her areas of research interest include identity, the “Other”, the history of art of Central Asia, and cross-cultural and religious encounters between Central and South Asia. She has contributed to a number of UNESCO programmes as an author, expert and consultant.
